Practicum Training
In the Clinical Psychology Program, the first 3 years of practicum training are taught in-house. The practica are sequential and graded in complexity.
The first year practicum focuses on humanistic and psychodynamic therapeutic techniques. The second year is a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) practicum in which students build on their skills from the first year and integrate them with CBT. In the third year practicum, students choose between advanced CBT for adults or children. The first practicum is housed in theÌýº£½Ç»»ÆÞ Counseling Center; the CBT and advanced CBT practica are Ìýhoused in theÌýJames J. Gray Psychotherapy ClinicÌýin the Department of Psychology.
Theoretical and empirical literature is integrated into each practicum experience in the context of readings and discussion. Each year-long practicum meets as a 3 credit/semester course, where students meet as a class for 2 ½ hours per week and receive additional individual and/or dyadic supervision.ÌýThroughout the practica experiences, students are encouraged to attend to multicultural perspectives and the intersection of identities.
